Interior design specialist Arthur Mclaughlin creates an inviting holiday setting in his contemporary Nob Hill residence, with decorative touches, including an impressive (10' tall) ribbon-swirled tree.

Rumored to be the first San Francisco residence of Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, the gracious home, constructed in 1910, features Beaux Arts architechture and copper ceilings throughout. Windows give a peek-a-boo view through outdoor foiliage, to the enterence to Grace Catheredral across the street.

The beribboned tree in the living room creates a delightful focal point that can also be seen from the dining room. A formal arrangement of pomegranates and oranges echoes the Beaux Arts architecture. Arthur McLaughlin relaxes on an overstuffed Mohair sofa with his Wheaton Terrier, Murphy, beneath an early 19th century painting of a woman. The coffee table arrangement of flowers, persimmons and baby pineapples reflects subtle holiday colors. The piano enjoys soft afternoon sun from the terrace. The front terrace features year round topiaries and a handsome fountain. Colorful fruit brightens a wreath with seasonal flavor. The white cyclamen and rich red pigments of the fruit offer a dramatic contrast to the black piano. The dining room table, a treasure found at the SF Fall Antiques Show, complements the Biedermeir chair. A festive Christmas tree flanks the italian carved marble fireplace. View of the dining room terrace has an antique armchair from Russia in the foreground.
